Can openers can be tricky at the best of times but as we get older they can become a real pain to use. Old hands and fingers can make this seemingly simple task a frustrating and painful chore. Fortunately we live in a time where technology can give us a bit of help and there are quite a few electric can openers out there that do all the work for us.
Now because there are quite a few to choose from we have selected the very best available for this article and tried to give you an idea of which will suit your needs best.

1. Cuisinart CCO-50BKN Deluxe Electric Can Opener
Let’s start with one of the best and most popular electric can openers currently available. Cuisinart as we know make a lot of great products for the kitchen so it’s no surprise to see they have made an excellent electric can opener.
Again this is really easy to use just put the can in place and snap down the lever and the machine starts opening the can for you as soon as the lever goes down. It stops automatically as well to stop the can falling. The product will open any standard can size and it does it really quickly too.
There are no batteries to worry about and because the product has such a simple design it is really easy to keep clean. The magnetic lid holder holds everything is place and this can all be removed if you want to clean it.
My main issue with this one is that it cuts the lid from the top meaning it leaves quite a sharp edge so you need to be careful.
This is a great choice for anyone but the design really does lend itself to older hands.
2. Hamilton Beach 76606ZA Smooth Touch Can Opener
Hamilton Beach are known for their quality products and this is a shining example. They have really thought about who will be using this device and designed it to suit there needs. Firstly the device is nice and large making it easy to handle. When you place a can in position you then snap down the large ergonomic handle on top and the machine grabs the can ready to open.
Then all you have to do is push the big button on top of the device and the can opener does the rest. It’s perfect for older hands as there is no fiddly buttons or levers, everything is really easy.
The opener uses a side cutting technique that leaves a nice smooth edge so there is no danger of you cutting yourself on the can. It will open any standard sized tins with ease. The product itself looks nice in its black and chrome finish so you will be happy to leave it sat out on the counter ready to use.
Another great thing is that this is powered by mains electric so you don’t have any fiddly batteries to change. It just keeps on going. This really is a 5 star product.
3. BangRui Automatic Can Opener Electric for Seniors
This one even says in the product name that it’s for older users so you would hope it excels in that purpose! Fortunately it does and it’s really easy to use.
You simply lay the opener on top of the can making sure the cutter is lined up properly. You then just press the button and watch it go to work. Like most of the other openers on this list it cuts the lid off safely leaving no sharp edges. The cut is great too and you can place the lid back on if you aren’t using all the contents of the can.
This works with pretty much any can size you throw at it too.
This one requires 4 AA batteries, which is a bit of a pain. If the batteries are dead when you come to use it you aren’t going to be able to open your tins unless you have spares on hand. Plus changing the batteries can be a fiddly job which is not ideal for old fingers! The plus side of this is that it is much more portable than mains powered devices and you can take this with you if you decide to travel somewhere and need your can opener with you.
4. BLACK+DECKER Spacemaker Multi-Purpose Can Opener, Black, CO100B
Let’s start by saying this one is huge. It’s designed to be fitted underneath your kitchen cupboards so it is always there and handy for use. It’s just massive and a bit of an eyesore in my opinion.
It is however pretty easy to use and it’s versatile too. It includes a bag cutter, bottle opener, and a knife sharpener. All the workings are hidden behind the front panel so it looks a bit tidier than having a bunch of blades sticking out into your kitchen.
You need to make sure your cabinets are going to be able to hold this thing. If you have space under there you are probably fine but if you have lighting or strange edges to your cupboards you may struggle. This thing is also a right faff to put up. You need power tools, it’s not straight forward at all. It’s mains powered as well so you need to take that into consideration when you install it. You will need a socket in a convenient place.
Once it is up there though it’s a pretty versatile tool that will solve a few kitchen problems all at once.
Conclusion
In my opinion the easiest to use were the Hamilton Beach and the Cuisinart. The other were good and performed well but they have too many negative points like needing batteries or difficult install.
Either of the first 2 items on the list would make an excellent choice for anyone looking for an electric can opener but both excel for older people.
Let us know in the comments which one you have and if we missed a great product you think we should add to this list.
